Understanding Powers and Roots
The Post Versalog 1460 provides dedicated scales for calculating powers and roots. These scales allow users to perform square, square root, cube and cube root calculations without repeated multiplication.
The primary power and root scales are:
- A scale: squares and square roots.
- B scale: additional square calculations.
- K scale: cubes and cube roots.
The correct scale selection is essential because each scale represents a different mathematical relationship.
Square Calculations Using the A Scale
The A scale represents the square of values shown on the D scale.
To find the square of a number:
- Locate the number on the D scale.
- Move the cursor hairline to the value.
- Read the corresponding squared value on the A scale.
- Determine the decimal position using estimation.
Example:
If the D scale value is 5, the A scale indicates 25 because 5 × 5 = 25.
Square Root Calculations
Square roots are performed in the reverse direction.
- Locate the squared value on the A scale.
- Transfer the position using the cursor.
- Read the original value on the D scale.
- Verify the expected magnitude.
Because the A scale covers a wider numerical range than the D scale, careful attention is required when selecting the correct scale section.
Using the B Scale
The B scale provides an additional square relationship and works with the A scale in extended calculations.
The B scale is useful when calculations require maintaining the relationship between multiple values without resetting the slide position.
Cube Calculations Using the K Scale
The K scale extends power calculations to the third power.

Decimal Placement
The slide rule does not display decimal points. The user must determine the correct magnitude of the answer.
Before reading a result, estimate the expected range:
- Squaring a number between 1 and 10 produces a result between 1 and 100.
- Squaring a number greater than 10 increases the magnitude quickly.
- Cubing a number changes the magnitude much faster than squaring.
Accuracy and Estimation
