Understanding Division on the Versalog 1460

Division is one of the fundamental calculations performed on the Post Versalog 1460. Like multiplication, division uses the logarithmic relationship between the C and D scales.

The slide rule does not perform division through subtraction. Instead, it uses the relationship between logarithmic distances to determine the quotient.

The C and D Scale Relationship

The standard division method uses the C scale and D scale:

  • The D scale provides the fixed reference.
  • The C scale provides the divisor relationship.
  • The cursor transfers the final position.

Basic Division Procedure

To divide one number by another using the C and D scales:

  • Locate the divisor on the C scale.
  • Align the divisor with the dividend on the D scale.
  • Move the cursor to the C scale index.
  • Read the quotient on the D scale.
  • Determine the decimal position using estimation.

Example: Dividing 10 by 2

To calculate 10 ÷ 2:

  • Locate 2 on the C scale.
  • Place it above 10 on the D scale.
  • Move the cursor to the C scale index.
  • Read the result on the D scale.
  • The answer is approximately 5.

The slide rule provides the relationship. The operator confirms the answer by recognising that 10 divided by 2 must be close to 5.

Division Across the Scale Index

Some division problems require using the opposite end of the C scale because the required alignment falls beyond the available range.

When this occurs, the user selects the appropriate index and continues the calculation from the opposite end of the scale.

Decimal Placement

The Versalog 1460 does not display decimal points. The user must estimate the expected magnitude of the answer.

  • 100 ÷ 2 should be approximately 50.
  • 10 ÷ 2 should be approximately 5.
  • 1 ÷ 2 should be approximately 0.5.

Correct decimal placement is a skill developed through estimation and repeated practice.

Division Using the CI Scale

The Post Versalog 1460 also provides an efficient division method using the CI scale.

The CI scale represents the reciprocal of the C scale. This allows division problems to be approached by using reciprocal relationships rather than the traditional C and D method.
