Understanding Slide Rule Scales

The Post Versalog 1460 uses logarithmic scales to transform multiplication, division, powers, roots and other mathematical operations into mechanical alignments. Learning to read the scales correctly is the foundation for accurate calculations.

A slide rule does not display answers directly. Instead, it displays relationships between numbers. The user must understand the scale being used, estimate the expected result and interpret the position of the cursor correctly.

Reading the Main Scales

The primary arithmetic scales on the Versalog 1460 are the C and D scales.

  • The D scale is a fixed reference scale.
  • The C scale moves with the slide.
  • The relationship between C and D allows multiplication and division.

Scale Markings

Each scale is divided using logarithmic spacing. The distance between numbers represents their mathematical relationship rather than equal numerical intervals.

On a linear ruler, the distance from 1 to 2 would be the same as the distance from 8 to 9. On a slide rule, the distance from 1 to 2 is much larger because the scale represents logarithmic values.

Reading Between Markings

The user must often estimate values between printed graduations. The accuracy depends on the length of the slide rule, the cursor alignment and the ability to interpolate between markings.

  • Large markings represent major values.
  • Medium markings represent intermediate values.
  • Small markings allow finer estimation.
  • The cursor hairline provides the final reading reference.

Understanding Scale Direction

Not every scale increases in the same direction. The CI scale, for example, is reversed because it represents reciprocal values.

Before reading any result, confirm:

  • The correct scale is being used.
  • The cursor is aligned with the intended value.
  • The direction of the scale is understood.
  • The decimal position has been estimated separately.

Accuracy and Estimation

A slide rule provides approximately three significant figures depending on the instrument length and user technique. The Versalog 1460 was designed as a precision engineering instrument, but the user remains responsible for determining whether the result is reasonable.

A good slide rule operator always performs a mental estimate before accepting the final value.
