Understanding Folded Scales

The Post Versalog 1460 includes folded scales to improve efficiency during engineering and scientific calculations. The folded scales are the CF and DF scales.

Folded scales are not different mathematical systems. They are shifted versions of the standard C and D logarithmic scales that reduce the amount of slide movement required during calculations.

The Purpose of CF and DF Scales

The CF and DF scales are shifted by a factor related to π. This allows calculations involving circular relationships to be performed more efficiently.

  • DF scale: folded version of the D scale.
  • CF scale: folded version of the C scale.
  • The relationship between them remains logarithmic.

Why Use Folded Scales?

On a standard C and D scale, some calculations require moving the slide to the beginning of the scale. Folded scales reduce this movement by providing an alternate starting position.

This is particularly useful for formulas involving:

Using the DF Scale

The DF scale performs the same type of calculations as the D scale but uses the folded position.
