Why Diesel?

Generator Wattage

Generator Startup

  1. Disconnect the battery charger from the generator.
  2. Remove the key from the wall hook.
  3. Open the garage door.
  4. Check the generator fuel and oil levels.
  5. Remove the electrical cable from the drawer and place it on the generator.
  6. Roll the generator onto the driveway.
  7. Make sure the breaker on the generator is off.
  8. Turn the fuel lever to the on position.
  9. Start the generator.
  10. Connect the electrical cable to the generator.
  11. Connect the other end of the electrical cable to the panel in the garage.
  12. Switch the generator power switch to 240 volts.
  13. Once the generator has had at least three minutes to warm up, turn on the generator’s electrical breaker.
  14. Verify that the power meter on the generator shows 240 volts.
  15. In the garage, switch circuits to the generator one at a time.
  16. Verify that the watt meters on the panel do not exceed 2500 watts.
  17. Close the garage door.
  18. In the house, place the battery in the carbon monoxide detector.
  19. Plug in the carbon monoxide detector in a frequently used area inside the house.

Generator Shut down

  1. Open the garage door.
  2. Switch the load back to the line on the panel.
  3. Turn off the generator’s electrical breaker and allow the generator to run without a load.
  4. Verify that the power meter on the generator shows zero volts.
  5. Disconnect the electrical cable from the generator.
  6. Place the electrical cable back in the drawer.
  7. Verify that the breaker on the generator is off.
  8. Once the generator has had at least three minutes to cool down, stop the generator.
  9. Roll the generator into the garage.
  10. Remove the key from the generator and place it on the wall hook.
  11. Check the generator fuel and oil levels.
  12. Turn the fuel lever to the off position.
  13. Connect the battery charger to the generator.
  14. Close the garage door.
  15. Unplug the carbon monoxide detector.
  16. In the house, remove the battery from the carbon monoxide detector after unplugging it.

Low Fuel Situation (less than 10 litres of fuel remaining)

  1. Transfer all frozen food from the Freezer in the house to the garage freezer.
  2. Rotate Blue Ice blocks upward from the bottom of the garage freezer to the top of the food.
  3. If it is cold outside, run the heater at maximum temperature.
  4. Close all drapes and blinds.
  5. Seal any cold air leaks (tape window and door seams).
  6. Charge all batteries.
  7. After 12 hours without power (after running out of diesel).
  8. If it is cold outside, freeze water in buckets and use it in the freezer to keep food cold.
  9. Eat the food that can spoil first (before spoilage happens).
